An example involving one-sided limits is presented. The appearance of absolute value signs in the function adds some challenge to the problem. Such ideas are seen in first-year university mathematics subjects.
The limit of a function as $x to a$ (if this limit exists) describes the functions behaviour "near" the point $a$. This can be important information in modelling, as this limit enables us to make predictions about the states of the phenomena when $x$ is close to $a$.
