Using the common expression But in many different ways.

The common expression but changes its meaning when it is used in different types of sentences. In this lesson, you will learn about the different uses of but.

1. To join two ideas that are not the same.
Example The changes made in the organization were small but important.

2. Used as except.
Example There is nothing to do but sleep.

3. Used as only (very unusual).
Example There is but one moon and one sun.

4. Cant but cant help but to emphasize something is true and there is no other possibility of anything else.
Example I cant help but admire his guts.

5. But for to express if something had not existed or happened.
Example The flight would have arrived on time but for the bad weather condition.

6. But then used before a remark which slightly contradicts what you have just said.
Example They never worked hard, but then who did?

7. But then again used before a remark which suggests that what you have just said shouldnt be surprising.
Example My friend spends hours at the salon, but then again, so do I.

8. Ifs and buts used when you want to say that no excuses would be accepted or when you think the reasons are not good enough.
Example My boss said, " Complete this project by tomorrow, no ifs and buts this time."
