Software regression is unwanted defects that occur in the system after system changes. This regression can be functional regression or non-functional regression. The causes of software regression are incorrect changes to common code, incorrect version control, incorrect bug fixes, incomplete bug fixes or software source code not updated according to platform changes.

Regression testing is testing to find out software regression defects. Regression testing should be done at all test levels, unit testing, integration testing and system testing. You should find out the impact of changes to the system. Then select regression test cases that cover the impacted components of the system. Regression testing should be done after any change to the system. At least, one complete regression test should be done before the system is deployed to production. Regression tests that are stable, frequently repeated and require no manual steps are good candidates for test automation. The regression test cases should be wide and detailed to catch bugs.
